Our Prof. O Mwantembe

Affiliated to the University of Pretoria, Professor Obedy Mwantembe is currently a Specialist Physician and Gastroenterologist at Arwyp medical centre in Kempton Park. Born and bred in Zambia and now a South African citizen, he obtained his Bsc and MBCHB in Zambia, followed by a PhD obtained from the University of Edinburgh (UK) in 1993.

He also obtained other qualifications from the UK, namely: M.R.C.P. (UK) , LRCP (Lond), MRCS(Eng), and FRCP (Edin).Professor Mwantembe is a member of the South African Gastroenterology Society and the South African HIV Society, as well as a collegiate member of the Royal college of Physicians of Glasgow. He is also the director of training in the African Institute of Digestive Diseases. He is also a member of the FASGE.

Prof Mwantembe’s specialized expertise saw him receiving the following awards/fellowships:

World Health Postgraduate Fellowship to study Immunology at the WHO regional centre in Nairobi as a Staff Development Fellow of the University of Zambia Medical School.

Alfred Beit Fellowship to the UK to obtain Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (1982-1984)

University of Edinburgh William Godall Scholarship (1988-1992)

Nestle’ Foundation Fellowship to study intestinal Immunology leading to D.Phil (1988-1992)
